Click on the speaker icon to play the optional background music for this

installed, left-clicking on the speaker icon causes the MIDI file to be
downloaded, media player started and music played. XHMTL doesn't support
embedded background sound files, this is because music is subjective and what
one person finds enjoyable another may find irritating. |

| BROADBAND IN FINDON |
|
The 21st Century evenually reached Findon
at the beginning of December 2004, when the local telephone exchange
was enabled for broadband by BT.
My 1,152Kbps connection was enabled on 16th December, so I was then able to set up a wireless network.
All our PCs could access the Internet and we could talk on the phone, all at the same time.
Better still, on 30th December 2004 our connection was upgraded to 2Mbps, so we could work even more efficiently.
It was wonderful!
Initially, when we moved to France in 2005 we didn't have a landline, so I accessed the Internet by means of a wireless
Vodaphone
Mobile Connect 3G/GPRS data card in my laptop. I used OnSpeed
to boost the 56Kbps dialup speed. Nowadays we have a landline with a 2Mbps connection to the Internet.
You can use Broadband|checker to find which ISPs
can provide you with broadband.

Satellite-based broadband access to the Internet is also available in Findon.
using technology provided by

Webrental
(ie a Findon Village based company) offers a free site survey and to get
you broadband enabled. Some Findon residents are
connected to the Internet via Webrental's satellite broadband service.
Webrental has satellite dish linked to the Internet that was supplied
in by a company called
Aramiska).
The signal is distributed around the village
using 802.11b
wireless technology (ie
Wi-Fi
or Wireless Fidelity).
Wi-Fi,
by its nature, is inherently a line-of-sight technology.
The signal strength is required by law to be very low, however but the PC card
in my laptop picks up the signal at about 54% strength, at the southern end of the village.
A site survey is necessary in order to test the
signal strength, to ensure that a high enough quality service can be provided.
The equipment required varies according to the location of the property
in the village, consequently the installation costs are variable
(typically £80-£150 for installation that includes a rooftop aerial).
A good line of sight to School Hill would be an advantage. For example,
you could try looking toward the clock tower on
St John the Baptist Primary School.
If you have a notebook or laptop computer that already has built-in
Wi-Fi
capability then you
might not need to pay any setup charge. If you have a desktop PC and
the signal is sufficiently strong enough, then you might not need an outdoor
aerial at all, rather you might find that a small
indoor aerial will suffice, in which case the installation charge would
be lower (approximately £60).
The signal can be distributed around the village by repeater aerials to
give the required coverage.
Reception usually requires an aerial on your roof and a wireless network card to be
installed in your PC (which requires a spare
PCI expansion slot).
Webrental claims that almost 100% of Findon village is covered by their
service and hopes to be able to extend coverage to the residents of nearby
Nepcote
and The Quadrangle during the next few weeks.
According to Mike Frater, both the
Gun Inn and the
Village House Hotel
are now
hot spots
, so guests will soon be able to send
SMS
text messages to gain a day's access
for airtime. Webrental would then send them a text message with details of
their guest user name and password.
Webrental claims to be up to 4 times faster than BT broadband
(ie with 512 Kbps
upload / 2,048 Kbps download).
According to Mike Frater, their download speed averaged 1,904 Kbps
(ie nearly 2 Mbps) during the first week of March 2004.
Your existing e-mail might still work. Users would need to change their
SMTP
server setting to
Aramiska),
but apart from that
POP
boxes should work as normal. Users of companies like
AOL would probably not be
able to keep their present e-mail address(es) unless the account was still being
paid for, but
Freeserve
type accounts should still work. Web rental also
offers e-mail addresses etc, as a part of their service. They would become
your
ISP,
so if you join their service it would be the same as someone moving
from
AOL to
Freeserve,
for example, so the same rules regarding e-mail addresses
would apply.
The monthly cost is £29.99 for home users and £34.99 for businesses,
with a 12 month agreement.

are a
WISP,
or Wireless Internet Service Provider.
They specialise in providing wireless broadband access to rural communities.
In order to connect you to the Internet without having to lay cables,
they use a WLAN,
or Wireless Local Area Network. For the technically minded,
this operates at 2.4 GHz - to the
IEEE 801.11 standards.
According to Martin Carter, they would only require a threshold of 50 customers in Findon and could be operational
in as little as 8 weeks.
moO broadband offers home users data transfer speeds of 256 Kbps
upload and
500 Kbps
download. All your high speed surfing would be covered in a single monthly
fixed price. It doesn't use your phone line, so no more missed calls while you
surf. You could share files and webcams across the community network with your
neighbours, or use a webcam to talk to your friends anywhere in the world
moO broadband offers business users transfer speeds of 500 Kbps
upload and 1 Mbps
download.
According to Martin Carter, satellite broadband can suffer from high
latency
and can also easily be affected by bad weather. Mike Frater (Webrental)
says bad weather could adversely affect the service, however such weather
conditions would affect any
Wi-Fi
network, so both services are equally as
susceptible. He says it's a bit
like TV interference caused by atmospheric conditions. As regards
latency,
he says he has
been advised by Aramiska that there is a delay to traffic but it is only
really noticeable if you wish to play online games.
Satellite Internet Explained In Plain English: Latency
Apparently, moO broadband's service would not involve satellite, rather it uses
one of the best network providers in the country (the name of which is unknown to the webmaster) and
aims to provide a service equal to, or better than, that provided by BT. Users would
be able to access their existing e-mail accounts.
The monthly charge for the standard package is £26.99

Lavasoft Ad-aware

While the Internet is a powerful
resource and provides users with many useful and often entertaining
things to see and do, it also has its dark side.
Most people are familiar with freeware, shareware, cookies, media players,
interactive content, and file sharing. What they may not realize is that some
of the aforementioned may contain code or components that allow the developers
of these applications and tools to actually collect and disseminate information
about those using them.
They can track your surfing habits, abuse your Internet connection by sending
this data to a third party, profile your shopping preferences, hijack your
browser start page or pages, alter important system files, and can do this
without your knowledge or permission. The security and privacy implications
of these exploits should be quite obvious and undesirable on any system or
network!
Lavasoft is the industry leader and most respected provider of anti-trackware
solutions. They have developed several applications that will provide you with the
means to keep your computer or network free of these compromising and intrusive
threats to your privacy.
